I recently came across the tragic story of Kishaun Mobley, and it's really stayed with me. Known as "Kmoney" to those who loved him, he was just 21 when his life was senselessly cut short just before Christmas in 2017. It’s particularly painful to think about his family facing such a profound loss during the holiday season. What's really troubling in this case is how entrenched the violence has become in certain neighborhoods like Austin, where Kishaun was killed. It seems his murder was tied to the Wicked Town faction of the Traveling Vice Lords, a gang trying to hold onto their territory and drug operations with an iron grip. The indictment against them talks about a whole range of violent acts, which makes it clear that Kishaun wasn't the only one affected and emphasizes the terrifying reality for many living in these areas. Think about all the families affected by this systemic violence. It’s harrowing. Despite the federal charges against the people suspected of being involved in these acts, the impact on Kishaun's family is immeasurable. They're left to carry the heavy weight of grief while the community continues to face ongoing violence. It's a harsh reminder of the work that needs to be done to tackle these issues and support those affected.
