Stormie Markland, 38, was reported missing by her family on March 20, 2023, after she failed to return home. She was last seen the evening of March 19 leaving a local country store with her ex-boyfriend, Leland David Johnson, who is also the father of her young son.

On March 22, walkers found Markland’s body in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests along Hoppers Creek Road. Investigators determined she had died from two gunshot wounds. Authorities arrested 44-year-old Leland David Johnson; Virginia State Police said security camera footage and witness statements contradicted his initial account.

Johnson was indicted on first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. On March 4, 2024, he pleaded guilty to first-degree murder in Rockbridge County Circuit Court and a sentencing hearing was scheduled.
