I'm writing this with a heavy heart after hearing about the tragic loss of Derek Cornell. It’s truly a devastating blow to the entire Goldfield community. As a fellow volunteer firefighter, I understand the risks we take every day, and it’s always terrifying to see someone so dedicated pay the ultimate price. The fact that Derek was killed in the line of duty while performing a service call is something that resonates deeply with me. It's a stark reminder of how vulnerable tow truck drivers are at work, often unprotected on the side of busy roads. Derek's bravery and dedication to helping others, both as a tow truck driver and firefighter, speak to his character and commitment. I never had the pleasure of meeting Derek personally, but I've only heard incredible things about his generosity and spirit from mutual colleagues. His dedication to the community and his family was apparent, and I can't begin to imagine the void his passing has left in their lives. I hope that those of us in similar professions take a moment to reflect on the importance of what Derek did and continue to honor him by fostering safe practices and supporting each other. Sending my deepest condolences to Keyna, his children, and everyone who knew him. Let's do what we can to support them during this incredibly difficult time. No one should have to go through this alone.
