It’s so incredibly difficult to process the loss of such a young life like O'Mauri’s. He was an innocent bystander caught in a storm that had nothing to do with him, and it’s just devastating. I’m both angry and frustrated thinking about how his family moved him to Matteson to keep him safe, only for tragedy to follow them there. It shows how deeply this violence runs and how no place feels truly safe anymore. Why is it that a simple altercation escalated to the point where lives were lost? I can't stop thinking about the lost potential O'Mauri had—he was doing so well in school, and it sounded like he had so much love to give and receive. My thoughts are with his family, especially his grandmother, Denise, who must be going through so much right now. I hope they find comfort in the support from their community and that justice brings some small piece of peace. It is heartening to see the village and the school district rallying to provide support, but I wish things were different for them.
