I came across this case recently, and my heart really goes out to Rajon’s family, especially his aunt, Athena. It’s chilling to think about how he had his whole life ahead of him, excited to start a new chapter as a freshman at Hyde Park High, only for it to be cruelly taken away. Something that sticks out to me is how the community has been coping in the aftermath. It must feel like a terrible shadow over Calumet Heights, knowing that such a senseless act of violence happened on what should have been just another evening. It’s reassuring to hear that Robert Lewis has been charged, but it brings up so many questions about why and how he thought this was acceptable. Was this a random incident, or did they know each other? I’ve been reflecting on how these tragedies affect young people in the area. The whole situation must weigh heavily on Rajon's friends and peers who now walk around with a sense of vulnerability. Hoping for justice and peace for everyone impacted.
