I'm still processing the devastating news about Dantrell Smith. It's such a monumental loss to the East St. Louis community, especially considering all the positive strides he was making. Just recently, I read about his involvement with TAKE and YouthBuild, and his drive to create opportunities for the youth. It’s just so inspiring and makes the situation even more incomprehensible. His actions were a beacon of hope in a place that desperately needs it. The thing that really hits me is the ripple effect of this violence. As we've seen time and again, the pain isn't just confined to Smith’s direct family; it reverberates through friends, co-workers, and all those who were positively touched by his initiatives. I didn't know him personally, but I feel his absence will be widely felt, and his memory mustn’t be forgotten. If only this could be a catalyst for change, as his aunt Kellie Vincent passionately advocates. To those who need support, please know the community seems to be rallying together. The GoFundMe is a glimmer of hope during this dark period, and I hope it alleviates some of the immediate burdens for his family. Let’s continue to support each other and push for an end to the senseless violence impacting so many lives.
