I’ve been thinking a lot about Shannon Alexander Watkins and the role risk plays in our everyday lives. Going to a gas station should be routine, but for Shannon, it became a life-changing moment in the worst possible way. I can’t shake the thought of how sudden and senseless this was. The fact that the suspect took the gun right from Shannon's holster makes me wonder about the heightened danger of openly carrying a weapon. Was this something Shannon felt comfortable doing, or a recent decision due to feeling unsafe? It’s heartbreaking to consider that what he thought might provide protection became part of a tragic turn of events. My heart goes out to Shannon’s family, especially his sons. In losing him, they’ve been forced to confront the fragility of life so unexpectedly. I hope the community rallies around them and that justice is served for Shannon.
