I came across this tragic case and it's been weighing heavy on my mind. It's about Jamarious Deante Smith, a young soul taken far too soon. Something that's really got me thinking is the role of "friendship" in all of this. Jamarious had autism and his mother, "Pumpkin," had concerns about the people he was with—the same ones who showed up at his doorstep that day. I can't help but feel for Pumpkin. She must have been worried sick when Jamarious left with them. It's horrifying to think that those he considered friends could lead him to his final moments at Lovejoy Park. I can’t imagine the anguish of wanting to protect your child but not being able to. Autism can make it hard for individuals to interpret social cues and intentions, which makes this all the more devastating. It's just so cruel that the very thing that made Jamarious vulnerable might have been exploited by people he trusted. I hope justice is truly served in his case and that there's more awareness about the vulnerability of those with autism, especially when it comes to choosing friends and understanding social situations. My heart goes out to Jamarious's mom and the rest of his family as they navigate this unimaginable loss.
