I wanted to discuss an angle of the Matthew Szejnrok and Kelley McCollom case that hits particularly hard for a lot of communities—Matthew's journey and his quest for a new beginning in Florida. After reading about the tragedy, I can't help but feel for his family and friends back in New Jersey. Matthew moved to Palm Bay after losing his own mother to COVID-19, which had already placed such an enormous weight on his heart. It's truly devastating to think that someone who went through so much difficulty still found ways to spread laughter and kindness wherever he went. Those who knew him always described him as having an "infectious laughter and kind heart," which is a testament to the joy he brought to many lives. His journey south for a fresh start was supposed to be about healing and hope. It's tragic and unfair that his life was cut short just as he was beginning to build a future for himself in Florida. My thoughts are with his family and friends who have had to endure yet another loss, and with all those who were lucky enough to have known him. Let's keep sharing the positive memories and stories surrounding Matthew, as keeping his spirit alive might bring some comfort amidst the sorrow.
