Does anyone have more information about the pier and its safety conditions at the time Robert went missing? I've been looking into the infrastructure in Port Stanley around the mid-70s, and it's curious that there's not much documented about safety measures or any kind of barrier in place to prevent incidents like this. I wonder if the absence of protective features contributed to the tragic event.
Considering the number of tourists and locals that frequent those areas, you'd think there would have been more immediate safety precautions even back then. It's haunting to think how a simple walk by the waterfront turned disastrous in a moment due to potentially overlooked precautions. I'm not saying it was anyone's fault, as Lake Erie's currents can be unpredictable, but it makes you think about how situations like these could maybe be prevented with better measures in place. Did the incident prompt any changes to the area at the time, or was it overlooked as a rare occurrence?
