I recently came across Sarah Skunk's case from the 80s and can't stop thinking about this aspect: how did an Indigenous woman end up in reform school for something as minor as breaking a window? It seems like such a harsh response, especially considering she was only 12 at the time. The fact that this separation from her family and culture might have been the start of a chain of events leading to her disappearance just adds another layer of tragedy to her story. Hearing about children being taken from their homes for seemingly minor reasons makes you wonder how many similar stories are out there and how many families are still feeling the impact of those separations today. Has anyone else here looked into the reform school system back then or know more about how these decisions were made?
