I’ve been thinking a lot about the role of weather and currents in Gabriel Simard's disappearance. Having visited the Les Bergeronnes area a few times during this season, I can confirm how quickly conditions change on the St. Lawrence River. It’s hard to imagine being caught out there, in a canoe of all things, with the wind picking up speed. I wonder if Gabriel had any emergency equipment with him, like a radio or GPS. It seems like he realized earlier in the day that returning was going to be a challenge. Did anyone hear if it was typical for him to head out without backup navigation tools? Given the call he made expressing concern, it seems like a tense situation developed quickly. It really drives home the need to respect the unpredictability of nature, especially on such a powerful river.
