Just finished reading some details about the disappearance of Timothy and Diane Papik in the summer of 1979. What's been on my mind is the role of unpredictable weather in such tragedies. The Canadian Arctic's climate is notorious for sudden shifts, and I wonder whether a fierce storm snuck up on them during their canoe journey. It's easy to think about navigation and preparedness today, but in '79, the tools available were much different. Were there any weather reports from that time indicating volatile conditions on Hudson Bay? I feel like even a small detail in a past weather log could shed light on what happened. If anyone has info or places to look for historical weather data from that area and time, please share! It's mind-boggling to think about how weather can change so swiftly, rendering even the most familiar routes perilous.
