I’ve been thinking a lot about how the family and community in Tolleson have been trying to piece things together since that New Year’s tragedy. It’s so tough to reconcile the image of Alejandro as a loving father with what happened. I read that the family had been trying to support him through his depression, even getting in touch with hotlines and friends. It must be so hard for Francisco and other relatives to think about what more could have been done. It's a heartbreaking situation for them, knowing they tried to help. The grief they must be feeling is unimaginable.
It seems like there were no overt warning signs, which makes it even more difficult to understand and come to terms with. It makes me wonder how often this might be the case—when someone struggles so deeply beneath the surface, but masks it well enough for those around them to not fully grasp the severity. I genuinely hope that through this tragedy, there can be a stronger push in our communities for mental health support that is more accessible and compassionate. My heart goes out to the family and everyone mourning Alejandra and Angelica’s loss.
