I came across this case recently, and something that stood out to me was the significance of the powerful tides at Waimea Beach Park during that time of year. I've read that the North Shore is notorious for its intense waves, especially in March, which is still considered surf season. Hawaiians are well aware that it can be particularly dangerous for swimmers who aren't familiar with such conditions. It makes you wonder if Antero had any experience with ocean swimming or if he might have underestimated the strength of those waves.
Does anyone know if there were signs posted at the beach warning about strong currents back then? It seems like they would be imperative during peak surf times. I'm not familiar with the safety measures in place back in 1990, but it might have helped to have more prominent warnings for tourists. I'm curious if there's more background on Antero's swimming abilities or if his actions might have been driven by a sense of adventure rather than caution. Any old-timers familiar with surf history around that area have insights on common practices for warning beachgoers back in the day?
