Nathaddeus J. Smith, 25, was fatally stabbed in the early morning hours of April 15, 1995, on the 1700 block of Kenyon Street NW in Washington, D.C. Witnesses saw a man in a red jacket chase Smith, and a struggle followed. Smith suffered numerous stab wounds to his face and chest; residents heard screams and called police, but officers found Smith had already died. The assailant fled in Smith’s car, which was later recovered by authorities.
Smith was a Banneker High School graduate who earned a degree from Strayer College and worked as a civilian clerk for the U.S. Army. He had been transferred to Montgomery, Alabama about six months earlier and had returned to Washington to visit his mother and siblings. Investigators have described the attack as overkill, noted Smith was a gay man, and have not discounted a possible hate-motivated crime; they also considered a pickup-murder scenario. No arrests have been announced and the Metropolitan Police Department’s Cold Case Unit is handling the investigation.
Did anyone in Adams Morgan or the Kenyon Street area remember seeing Smith, a red-jacketed man, or Smith’s car that night?
