Sheriff George T. Young, 45, was killed on the evening of November 9, 1900, in Springdale, Montana. The prior day a man fitting a rough description had robbed a train bound for Garrison and then shot and killed rancher E.V. Beaver in Logan. That suspect was later spotted at the Springdale train depot, and Sheriff Young, with undersheriff Frank Beller, went to question him.
At about 6 p.m. Young moved through the depot to identify the man after consulting the station agent. According to reports, the suspect produced a revolver, shot and wounded Beller, then fired a single fatal shot through Young’s heart; Young is believed to have died instantly. The gunman escaped into the surrounding country and was not captured despite a large posse and an extensive manhunt described as one of the greatest in eastern Montana’s history.
The assailant’s identity remains unknown and the killing unsolved. If anyone has family lore or local records about that November 1900 manhunt or the suspect’s possible identity, please share what is known.
