Fred Stevens was a Caucasian police officer in Havre, Montana, who was shot and killed on May 25, 1904, while performing his duties. His death initiated a multi-state crime spree by the same killer that included the fatal shooting of Sheriff Harry Harris in St. Croix County, Wisconsin, the following month.
The suspect continued his violence and on September 16, 1904, shot and killed the mayor of Thompson, Illinois, during an attempted arrest for a saloon robbery. That incident led to the suspect’s capture. By January 1, 1905, the 26-year-old man was identified as the killer of both Sheriff Harris and Policeman Fred Stevens. He was convicted for the mayor’s murder, sentenced to life in Joliet Penitentiary, and later died in prison.
Were there descendants, colleagues, or local records in Havre who remember Officer Stevens or can share more about his life and service?
