Trooper David James DelLaittre, 23, was killed on December 1, 2010, near the Three Forks Airport in Gallatin County, Montana. The shooting began about 4:20 p.m. during a traffic stop of a 1999 green Ford F-250 driven by 56-year-old Errol Brent Bouldin. Before DeLaittre could exit his patrol car, Bouldin approached, went back to his truck for a 12-gauge shotgun, and opened fire. An exchange of gunfire followed; DeLaittre was hit in the abdomen, took cover on the passenger side of his patrol car and returned fire, then was struck fatally in a second exchange.
Bouldin was wounded in the chest during the shootout, fled in his truck, and later was found dead in Broadwater County from a self-inflicted .22 caliber rifle wound. An autopsy showed DeLaittre had struck Bouldin in the chest, fracturing three ribs and damaging his right lung. DeLaittre had served two years with the Montana Highway Patrol and came from a family with a long history in law enforcement.
If anyone witnessed the traffic stop or has information about the events that afternoon, please share what is known.
