Travis Albert Carlson, 39, was shot and killed on October 19, 2017, in a field southeast of Ekalaka, Montana. He had been working on his custom fencing business when witnesses say they saw an altercation between Travis and his identical twin brother, Eric Carlson, shortly before the shooting.
Investigators quickly identified Eric as the suspect. Eric fled the scene and was found dead at his home the next morning, October 20, 2017, from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Authorities treated the matter as a murder-suicide and cited a long-standing feud between the brothers as the likely motive. The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation led the inquiry and planned to turn findings over to the Carter County Attorney’s Office.
Travis, originally from the Canton, South Dakota area, had recently married in July 2017 and was remembered for his big smile, laugh, and willingness to help others. If anyone knew Travis or has information about the events of October 19–20, 2017, please share what you remember.
