Rehn Peterson III, 44, was shot and killed on November 21, 2023, at 820 Bonner Avenue North in Red Lodge, Montana. What began as a bitter text-message argument over a fantasy football league escalated when Peterson went to the address and was shot five times; he was pronounced dead at the scene. Testing showed he had a blood alcohol content of 0.313 and a THC level of 54 ng/mL. At least one shot was fired from very close range, less than two feet, and shell casings were found near the porch and in the yard around a corner from the porch. Witnesses described Peterson as a nonviolent, outdoors-loving person who had been drinking that evening because of a sewage problem at his home.

Authorities say the dispute involved another league member, Travis Morgan Sherrod, who had removed Peterson from the league and exchanged heated messages with him, including Let’s go and Bring it. Sherrod called 911 at about 9:18 p.m. to report the shooting, was found at the scene with his hands over his head and the handgun on a vehicle, and later said he fired after Peterson lunged for the gun; prosecutors have said Sherrod admitted he purposely shot Peterson while Sherrod has claimed self-defense. The central question in the investigation is whether deadly force was reasonable.

Does anyone have details about the lead-up to that night or eyewitness information from 820 Bonner Avenue North?
