I came across an interesting tidbit about Officer Rex A. Sanford that I thought was worth sharing with this forum. I recently read about a story involving a young boy in Sylacauga who had the chance encounter of a lifetime with Officer Sanford shortly before the tragedy. The boy, then only around 8 years old, had managed to get his kite stuck in a tree in a nearby park, causing him immense frustration. Officer Sanford, while on his usual patrol, noticed the situation and stopped to lend a hand. What impressed me the most wasn't just that Rex helped the boy retrieve the kite, but that he took the time to teach him how to make adjustments to avoid future mishaps. It’s a small story, but it gives us a glimpse into the kind of person he was—someone who went above and beyond the call of duty, not just as a police officer but as a member of the community who truly cared. His kindness and approachability had a significant impact on that young boy who, now an elderly man, still speaks of that day with gratitude and admiration. These stories remind us that Officer Sanford was not only a dedicated officer but also a genuine, caring individual who left a lasting impression on those he met. It's these memories that help keep his spirit alive within the Sylacauga community all these years later. My thoughts go out to his family and friends and all who remember him.
