This case has always been so intriguing to me, especially the involvement of Harry "Tex" Higgins. Something that stands out is the fact that he returned without Billy and mentioned a near-accident on Depot Street. I've always wondered if it's possible Higgins saw something more than just Billy playing in the street, maybe something or someone that spooked him into saying what he did. It's strange to me that he was held for two weeks but ultimately released, despite the polygraph results suggesting he wasn't entirely forthcoming.
I also find it curious that he was never charged with anything despite his past of wife desertion. It makes me think about how the community might have viewed him—a bit of an outsider maybe, but still someone the Martins trusted enough to have close to their kids. The police must have had something more concrete to let him go after holding him for so long. Does anyone have more insight into why the investigation did not lead to charges against Higgins, or any further leads he might have pointed them to?
Hey everyone, I've been digging into the Billy Earl Martin case again and can't shake this weird feeling about Tex Higgins. Even though the polygraph tests were inconclusive, the fact that he was the one with Billy just before he vanished and the first to bring up Depot Street really bothers me. What's odd is that he had no real prior criminal history besides that desertion incident, yet something doesn’t sit right with him being casually let off the hook after just two weeks. Anyone else find it strange how his story about last seeing Billy playing in the road didn't really line up with the reports? I would love to know more about Tex's life after he left Brazil, Indiana. Did he move away? Did he have any more charges pressed against him? It's just puzzling how this angle of the story hasn't been fleshed out more or followed up over the years. Any thoughts on this?
