I recently went down a rabbit hole researching Edward "Eddie" Aikau and couldn't help but wonder about that deep connection surfers have with the ocean. It's like they have this sixth sense about weather patterns and waves. Aikau’s decision to paddle out for help, with just his surfboard and raw determination, speaks volumes about his understanding and respect for the sea. Even though the outcome was tragic, his choice was rooted in profound knowledge and intuition. I read somewhere that before the Hōkūleʻa voyage, Eddie rigorously trained for months, mentally and physically preparing himself for any challenge. It's chilling to think how certain he must have felt about his chances in those waters. If anyone here knows more about how surfers train for such endurance and navigation skills, I'd love to learn more about it.
