Myles LaShay McLean, a 23-year-old Black transgender woman known as Shay, was found with a fatal gunshot wound at about 4:30 a.m. on July 20, 2011, in the 6100 block of Dix Street NE in Washington, D.C. She was a client of Transgender Health Empowerment and had been seeking placement at a nearby group home for homeless gay and transgender youth ten blocks from where she was found.
Authorities treated the killing as a possible hate crime and initially sought two male suspects. One was later described as a brown-complexioned Black male, about 22 years old, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, roughly 150 pounds, with short black hair, wearing a brimless cap, black shirt and blue jeans, and armed with a handgun. Vigils were held after the shooting and a memorial shrine was later burned; no arrests have been made.
The Metropolitan Police Department is offering up to a $25,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction. If anyone knew Myles McLean or has information about the night of July 20, 2011, please come forward.
