Tyronn Vincent Garner was 17 when he was shot in the head on the night of October 31, 2011, in the 2800 block of M Street NW in Georgetown. He survived in critical condition for a week but died on the evening of November 7, 2011, turning the shooting into a homicide investigation.
Witnesses said a man fled the scene and Metropolitan Police pursued someone they arrested: 24-year-old Andre Coleman was charged with carrying a pistol without a license. Authorities did not charge anyone in Garner’s murder and the case remained open, with a reward offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
Garner was a ward of the city’s Department of Youth Rehabilitation Services and had been slated for transfer to a juvenile facility in Pennsylvania that could offer more services; the transfer did not occur and he stayed in a secure Maryland facility before being placed on probation with a curfew about a month before his death. Who fired the shot that killed Tyronn Garner?
