On August 24, 2022, James Johnson, 53, and his cousin Rashad Johnson, 43, were killed in a daylight shooting on the unit block of O Street, NW in Washington, D.C. Both men were with a group in an area described by police as an open-air drug market when a 2020 Hyundai Santa Fe pulled up shortly before 1 p.m., at least two people exited and opened fire. Five people were struck; James and Rashad died at the scene and three other men were wounded and survived.

Hours later, police say a separate shooting a few blocks away appears to have been retaliatory; arrests were made in that later incident. No arrests have been announced in the double homicide of James and Rashad Johnson, and no suspects have been publicly identified. Authorities have circulated details about the suspect vehicle and continue to seek tips.
