It’s been a really tough time for Mount Vernon after Tavoris McConnell Sr. was murdered last month. I heard from some folks in town that Tavoris was a regular down at the local community center, often pitching in to help with events and get-togethers. People remember him fondly for that great sense of humor and friendly nature. It's just so unsettling that someone well-liked in our community could be targeted like this. I’ve seen a number of neighbors rallying together, organizing candlelight vigils and support groups to cope with the loss and also to ensure Tavoris is remembered not just as another statistic. It’s humbling to see how people have come together, despite the fear and sadness. It’s a reminder of the strength in community, even when confronted with such senseless violence. Hopefully, the outreach and involvement from the community will also lead to some tips for the police. The thought that his killer is still out there is deeply unsettling. We all owe it to his memory and his family to stay vigilant and offer any piece of information, no matter how small it might seem.
