Finding out about Harley King’s tragic death struck me hard, not just because he was a victim, but because of the rich life he led. A WWII veteran, skilled hunter, and pilot—Harley seemed like someone who embraced the Alaskan wilderness and lived life to the fullest. It’s devastating to think that what was likely a routine trip on his snowmobile into McCarthy to get the mail would end in such horror. The fact that survivors managed to stop Hastings from completing his plan is a small comfort, but it does nothing to diminish the loss felt by Harley’s wife and the entire community. Thinking of them and hoping that sharing these stories can help to keep his memory alive.
I’ve been thinking a lot about Harley Bain King and can’t help but feel a deep respect for his contributions and life. As a fellow veteran myself, I immediately felt a connection when I learned he served in WWII. It's harrowing to consider that someone who bravely faced one of history's greatest conflicts would meet such a senseless fate in his own community.
It’s so insightful to learn about the lives these victims led before the tragedy. Harley wasn’t just a name on a list; he was an integral part of his community—a hunter, a guide, and a fisherman. He clearly had a deep connection to McCarthy and the Alaskan wilderness. His presence there was no doubt a pillar for those who knew him, and that makes his loss even more profound.
My thoughts go out to Jo and the families and friends of all the victims as they continue to navigate the pain and loss. It’s stories like these that really underscore the fragility of life and the importance of community—something rural places like McCarthy often exemplify. Let's keep their memories alive by sharing these stories and holding onto the values and connections they cherished.
