I can't stop thinking about the surveillance footage from the Citgo gas station on that tragic night in 2013. It's haunting to see Sheresa Moore in her final moments, simply going about her business, unaware of the senseless violence about to unfold. I can’t even begin to imagine the shock and horror her family must feel watching it. What strikes me most is the randomness of the attack—how Sheresa, a young woman with so much life ahead of her, could become a victim just like that.
It's been ten years, and while an arrest was made, I still wonder what specific evidence led to Byron Lathan’s warrant being issued years after her murder. Was there a breakthrough, or was it a culmination of small leads that finally brought some semblance of justice? The lenient sentencing on the arson charge feels like a slap in the face given the life lost and the pain that still lingers for her loved ones.
The community’s response—with vigils and marches—reminds us all how important it is to stand together against violence. There's a bittersweet grace in coming together to mourn and remember, yet it also underscores the urgent need for change. Sheresa's story is a tragic example of why we must continue pushing for safer communities and supporting those impacted by such heartbreaking losses. My thoughts are with Sheresa’s family; may they find peace and strength as they continue to seek justice and healing.
