I can’t shake the feeling that we need more dialogue about the role of community vigilance in preventing tragedies like the one that took Steven Brownlee’s life. I live not too far from Hickory Hill, and the neighborhood used to feel much safer. I've noticed more people in the area becoming indifferent to gunfire, passing it off as just "another day" in Memphis. It’s scary to think this sort of attitude may allow senseless acts like this to continue. Steven’s death hit close to home for a lot of us who wish dearly for change. It's important for neighbors to lean on each other and report suspicious behavior; we need to break the cycle of silence and fear. My heart goes out to Steven’s family and friends enduring such a devastating loss. I hope we can unite to bring more awareness and pressure for actionable change. We owe it to Steven and countless others who have been taken too soon.
