Does anyone else remember the discussion about community response during the wave of violence back in 2007? I’ve been reading up on Antuan Askew’s case, and it reminded me of how neighborhoods were pulling together to try and combat the escalating situation. It must have been incredibly difficult for the families, like the Askews, who were trying to find a sense of justice amidst it all. I always think about what the atmosphere was like at the time, with everyone on edge and communities trying their best to rally for peace. So many events then were organized by local leaders and volunteers focusing on creating safe spaces for young adults and encouraging dialogue on how to curb violence. Did any of these efforts lead to lasting changes, or were they overshadowed by the enormity of the problem? My heart goes out to Antuan’s family and everyone else who was affected. It’s vital we keep these conversations alive to continue pushing for change. Maybe if we share what worked and what didn’t back then, we can find more effective solutions today.

I’ve been reading up on Antuan Askew's case from 2007 and it’s just so devastating to think about how many young lives were cut short during that year in Philadelphia. Something that really struck me was the ripple effect this violence has on entire families and communities. It’s not just the loss of one person. When you lose someone like Antuan, you're losing a son, a friend, maybe even a father. The emotional weight that families have to carry is unimaginable. I’ve often wondered what kind of support systems are in place for their families even years later. Are there networks or groups that help families of homicide victims cope? It feels like such a crucial part of the healing process, yet often it seems like these families are left to process and mourn on their own. If anyone has insights or knows of resources, I’d love to hear more. Keep these families in your thoughts—they’re living with this loss every single day.
