Leigh's case has so many twists and turns, it's difficult to pinpoint where things went wrong. One thing that has always puzzled me is why the police delayed in taking the missing persons report seriously. Even with the knowledge that Leigh was just a kid, out working and trying to earn an honest dollar for a gift for his mom, it seems odd that there wasn’t a more immediate response. I get that back then, waiting periods were commonplace, but every moment counts, especially in cases involving children. Would love to hear what others think about how different things might have been with a faster police response.
Has anyone looked into Leigh's shoeshine kit more closely? I know it's been decades, but I've always wondered if there might have been any clues in or on it that were overlooked back then. Was it possible that someone else handled it after he disappeared? People leave prints or DNA without realizing it. The fact that the diner owner returned the kit is worth noting. Did the police ever investigate the owner or any regulars there, or was the focus primarily on the racetrack? It seems like that kit could have been crucial evidence if properly analyzed, even if at the time, forensic tech was not what it is today. Is there any record of analysis, or maybe even photos of what was inside it at the time?
