I've been following Thomas Carleton's case for a while, and something that's always puzzled me is his decision not to bring a camp stove or tent. Even for a three-day hike, it seems risky, especially with the unpredictable weather in the High Peaks in October. As an experienced hiker and a member of the Adirondack Mountain Club, he must have understood the risks. Maybe he was trying to travel light, but that approach seems unusual for the expected conditions. Could this indicate he had alternative plans or expected to modify his route? Or perhaps he was more confident in his survival skills than most of us would be? Would love to hear everyone's thoughts on this aspect and if anyone else would have made the same gear choices.
