I’ve been following Rodney Blackman’s case, and I can’t help but feel for his family and friends. It’s incredibly frustrating to think about how the chronic understaffing in the Oakland Police Department back in 2009 impacted so many families, including Rodney's. They were already dealing with the trauma of losing a loved one, and then to have no resolution...it’s unimaginable. During that time, you would think that somewhere there might have been a push to bring in more resources or seek outside help for the overwhelmed detectives. But from what I've read, the support just wasn't there. It's clear that Rodney and others in similar cases became victims twice over, first to violence and then to a system that was struggling on so many levels. I hope that after all these years, there still might be some way to revisit these cases with fresh eyes and renewed resources, giving families some hope and relieving just a bit of their enduring pain. It’s time for a change, don’t you all think?
