I was digging into some of the old unsolved cases in Oakland and came across the tragic story of Bounhom Manyvong. He was a security guard who got shot while trying to stop a couple of people from shoplifting at an Auto Zone back in 2009. I just can't get over the bravery it must've taken for him to confront them, and how sad it is that it cost him his life.
It's baffling how even with a pretty decent description of the two guys involved, the case is still unsolved after all these years. The suspect in the green, fur-lined jacket, particularly—it seems like the kind of detail that someone might remember seeing.
We see these kinds of stories too often, and it’s frustrating when witnesses are reluctant to step forward. I totally understand the fear people might feel, especially in areas with lots of crime, but it’s also heartbreaking that families like the Manyvongs are left in limbo without justice for their loved ones.
If you were in Oakland back then or knew anyone who might've been, maybe it's worth reaching out—or even just keeping an eye out for any old clues. I really hope his family gets the closure they deserve soon. ?️
Just read about the tragic case of Bounhom Manyvong, and I can’t stop thinking about the broader issues it highlights about violence in Oakland. It’s devastating that his family is still waiting for answers all these years later. What really struck me is how fear of retaliation can keep witnesses silent. Communities shouldn't have to live in that kind of fear, but it's a sad reality. If you’re from the area or know people there, maybe this is a reminder about the importance of community support and looking out for one another. Sometimes, the smallest piece of information can make a big difference, and I can only hope that someone comes forward with the information needed to help resolve this case. My heart goes out to Manyvong’s family as they continue to search for justice.
