I can't stop thinking about the tragedy of Dawn Louise Basom. It's chilling to imagine how such a young, vibrant life was cut so short. It must have been deeply unsettling for her family and friends at West Junior High School, knowing Dawn had taken that familiar route home along the Penn Central Railroad tracks so many times without incident, only to have this happen. The fact that a place like Ypsilanti, where people knew each other and looked out for one another, could be gripped by such fear is unimaginable. The abandoned farmhouse discovery is particularly unsettling, not just for the implications about Dawn's murder, but also for Maralynn Skelton’s case. The farmhouse feels like a ghastly nest of the killer, a place where he felt safe enough to commit these acts. It’s a painful reminder that sometimes evil lurks far too close to home, disguised in the everyday. I hope we can continue to remember Dawn, and all the victims, as we discuss these cases. Their lives and stories are more than the horror of their untimely deaths, and we owe it to them to keep pushing for any lingering questions to be answered, even all these years later.
