I’ve been digging into the details surrounding Milton Rudolph Canter’s case, and one thing I can’t get over is how long it took for Donald Harvey's actions to come to light. It’s chilling to think about the environment at Daniel Drake Memorial Hospital at that time. Did nobody notice anything off with the orderly's behavior? It seems that by the time John's autopsy revealed the cyanide, so many patients, including Canter, had already been put in harm's way. My heart goes out to Canter's family, who only learned later that a trusted caretaker was responsible. It must be so difficult to reconcile that someone they trusted for medical care was capable of such deceit. I keep thinking about hospital protocols now versus then and hoping such a tragedy never happens again. This case serves as a haunting reminder of the need for vigilance and checks within our health-care systems.
