I’ve been following the tragic situation involving Byron Waska with a heavy heart. It’s deeply concerning how a request to check out a handgun can end in such tragedy, especially in a small and tight-knit community like Atmautluak. My thoughts go out to Byron's family and friends as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. What truly puzzles me are the changing statements from Levi Beaver. Why would someone alter their account if there isn’t more to the story? The fact that he was intoxicated raises further questions about responsible gun ownership and the impact it has on others. Handing over a weapon under those conditions seems like a recipe for disaster. It’s just so sad and frustrating that this happened when it probably could have been avoided. I hope that the investigation will bring some clarity and justice, whatever the outcome might be. It’s important for the community to see accountability and hopefully prevent anything similar from happening in the future.
