I'm still trying to wrap my head around what happened in Muscatine. It's so hard to comprehend how a community could lose six of its own in such a tragic way. Lesa McFarland, known by so many through her work at Susan Clark Junior High, was more than just a familiar face in the school cafeteria. I've heard from friends in Muscatine about her kindness and dedication to the students she served every day. It's a tough pill to swallow knowing that her life and the lives of others in her family were cut short in a senseless act. It's gut-wrenching to think about the students returning to school in the fall, knowing Ms. McFarland won't be there. These kids have lost not only a staff member but a supportive adult who likely made a lasting impact on them. My heart goes out to her surviving family, especially Johnathan. His words during the vigil showed immense strength amidst the deepest layers of grief. I sincerely hope the community continues to rally around him and all those affected as they navigate this painful journey ahead.
