Has anyone else been thinking about the connection between Nuno Loureiro and Cláudio Valente being traced back to their time at the Instituto Superior Técnico? It's haunting to think that something from decades ago could have festered and led to such tragedy. The academic world is tight-knit, and you hope your shared experiences bond you positively. It's so puzzling because both of them presumably went on to have successful careers – Loureiro as a respected physicist and Valente until this event seemed to be relatively under the radar. Given this information, what kind of grievances could lead to such a drastic and horrifying outcome years later? Were there any signs back then? My heart truly goes out to Loureiro’s colleagues and students, especially those who must grapple with the loss alongside the nature of these events. They held vigils, which shows how respected he was in his field. I hope the academic communities at MIT and Brown find healing in the wake of this unfathomable incident. Has there been any discussion or information on past grievances during their time at the university that might help us understand this better?
