I’ve been following the tragic death of John Beam, and my heart goes out to his family, friends, and the entire Laney College community. What truly stood out to me in this case is Beam’s outspoken concern over campus security just the day before the incident. It's unsettling to think he voiced such a prescient warning about the lack of armed security, only to become a victim himself. Does anyone else find it particularly chilling and infuriating that his calls for heightened security were still hanging in the air when this horrendous act took place? I can’t help but wonder if security changes might be harder to push through on campuses until something terrible happens. In honor of Beam’s legacy and dedication to the community, I hope his concerns spark real conversations and lead to tangible changes. What are everyone else's thoughts on how institutions like Laney College can proactively address safety concerns without waiting for a tragedy to be the catalyst?
