I’ve been quietly following the tragic case of Matthew DeGroat and it’s just so tragic to hear about such a young life cut short. I was particularly struck by the impact on his classmates and the school community in Newburgh. It’s hard to imagine the fear and confusion those students must have felt during the lockdown, and now they’re facing the loss of a friend. I'm hoping schools in the area are providing counseling and support for those who need it most.
The fact that another young life is now entangled in the justice system complicates the emotions surrounding this tragedy. Sometimes we forget that the community ripple effect is immense, touching not just families but entire neighborhoods. Thoughts go out to everyone involved, and I hope for peace and healing for Matthew’s family, friends, and the broader Newburgh community.
Hey everyone,
I've been following Matthew DeGroat's case closely and something that stuck out to me was how the Newburgh community came together so quickly. From reading about the family’s reaction, it sounds like they’ve been really supported, and it's amazing to see that sense of community in such a tragic time. The SNUG anti-gun-violence program getting involved is a step in the right direction. It's just so sad to think about a young life with so much potential ending this way.
I can't imagine what Matthew's family and friends are going through right now—all those who knew and loved him are in my thoughts. It's encouraging to see how people are showing up by organizing memorials and fundraisers. If anyone in the area has more info on those memorial services or ways we can help support the family, please share.
Stay safe, everyone.
