I've been thinking a lot about the impact Desarae Ellemae Jones' murder had on the community back in the '90s, especially given the flaws in the system back then. It's truly upsetting that it took so long for Desarae and the other victims' voices to be heard. How is it that someone like Chester Turner could operate for so long without being caught? It makes you wonder what could have been done differently if there had been more attention on these crimes from both law enforcement and the media. I can't imagine the pain Desarae's family went through, not only losing her in such a tragic manner but also seeing her case initially swept under the rug. It's an important reminder of the need for sustained focus on marginalized communities. Their lives and stories matter just as much.
