Aldo Serini, a 70-year-old white man, died on September 23, 1993, inside the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Northport on Long Island. His death was later described in court as caused by injections of toxic substances that produced respiratory failure rather than by natural decline. Serini’s death became part of a pattern of suspicious patient deaths at Northport in 1993 amid the presence of a young physician, Michael J. Swango.

Swango had a prior conviction for poisoning co-workers in Illinois and had obtained medical positions by misrepresenting his past. Prosecutors alleged he administered toxins by needle, altered clinical decision-making, and in some instances told staff that families had issued do not resuscitate orders to prevent intervention. He was indicted in the deaths of three Northport patients, including Serini, and ultimately pleaded guilty, admitting he intentionally caused deaths by administering toxic substances. A federal judge sentenced him to life in prison without parole.

Are there readers who remember Aldo Serini or who worked at Northport in 1993 and can share what the wards were like then?
