I've been reflecting on Catherine Shelkons and what an incredibly strong person she must be. Surviving such a traumatic event is unimaginable, and yet she endured it. I can't begin to comprehend the bravery it took for her to navigate such horror and then deal with its aftermath. It's especially poignant knowing their daughter had just come home, potentially preventing even more tragedy. The details of her courage, even in her vulnerability, are striking. It must have been a surreal moment when that bandana-wearing assailant made her fear for her life. And then to later find out that the suspect confessed but won't be charged? That's a lot to process. I hope wherever life has taken Catherine and her family, they've been surrounded by love and support. It's important for us to remember the strength of survivors in these stories, alongside the victims.

Has anyone else been haunted by the detail about John Shelkons collapsing against the couch where Catherine was sleeping? I just keep thinking about how terrifying it must’ve been for Catherine to wake up to such a horrific scene and then endure the brutal attack herself. It breaks my heart for their children, too. To know that their father was killed and mother assaulted in the place that’s supposed to be their safe haven is truly tragic. I’m glad that the daughter’s unexpected return potentially saved Catherine's life, but the trauma they must carry is unimaginable. It’s moments like these that make you realize how senseless violence leaves a lasting impact not just on victims, but on entire families for generations.
