I've been reading through some old cases, and the story of Mary Alice Briscolina and Elsie Farmer really strikes a chord with me. It's so troubling to think about the false sense of security that people had, assuming safety because Schaefer was a deputy. How devastating for the families to not only lose their daughters but also to find out they fell victim to someone who should have protected them. The trust in law enforcement was so severely undermined. As a parent, I can't even begin to fathom the horror of that discovery and the deep sense of betrayal by a man who misused his position in such a horrendous way. It's even more unsettling to reflect on how brazen Schaefer was in his methods – posing as a protector while being a predator in disguise. My heart goes out to the families still grappling with this chilling reality, and I hope they've found some peace over the years.
