I've been thinking a lot about the environment and community of Skid Row during that time when Augustine Luna and the others were killed. In 1978, it was an area teeming with so many people in dire situations, and it makes me wonder if the transient nature of its population made it easier for someone like the attacker to go unnoticed for so long. It's a sad reflection on how society often overlooks those who are struggling.
Look at how vulnerable the community was to someone preying on them. The lack of security and visibility for those living on the streets at that time, and honestly even now, is appalling. I can't imagine the fear they must have felt knowing there was a serial killer targeting real people like them. These weren't just "victims"; they were individuals with stories and loved ones who still feel this loss deeply. Augustine Luna's devastating murder, and the murders of so many others, underscore the need for greater protection and care for communities at risk. It’s been decades, but I hope this serves as a reminder of the gaps in our social systems that must be addressed.
