I recently came across Cheryl Lee Wims' case, and it made me think about how often young women like her were overlooked and forgotten back in the '80s. She was just starting out in life, working as a busgirl, and had her struggles, sure, but who doesn't at 18? It's heart-wrenching to know she disappeared on her birthday of all days. I can't imagine the pain her family went through when they realized she was gone, only to later find that she was one of so many victims of the Green River Killer.
Cheryl's story highlights how society sometimes fails to protect its most vulnerable. Her connection to the Central District and the Pacific Highway South shows she was just another person trying to find her way in the world, not deserving of such a tragic end. I'm especially moved when I think about her sister, Deborah, who disappeared under similar circumstances. It's a grim reminder of the time and the city. It's crucial we remember these victims as individuals with lives and futures stolen from them. My heart goes out to the Wims family and all the other families who suffered from these horrific acts.
