I've recently been thinking about the community and support networks around victims of unsolved cases, especially in times before DNA breakthroughs, like Marla Jean Hires' case. It’s sobering to imagine the pain Marla's family endured for all those years without answers. Her child, growing up without a mother while grappling with lingering questions, must have been indescribably challenging. Children often carry the emotional weight of such tragic events throughout their lives, shaping who they become. While the DNA evidence finally brought justice and closure, remembering the human side of these stories is so important. It also reminds me of the tough work that cold case units do, and I’m thankful for their relentless pursuit of justice.
